George and Judith Goodman Named 2026 Dorothy A. Johnson Community Philanthropy Award Honorees

Oct 23, 2026 | Press Release

George and Judith Goodman, longtime supporters of the Mackinac Island Community Foundation (MICF) and the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation (AAACF), have been named the 2026 honorees of the Dorothy A. Johnson Community Philanthropy Award.

The Council of Michigan Foundations (CMF) and the Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA) created the award in 2006. Each year it honors an individual or family for exceptional service to Michigan’s community foundations and for helping community philanthropy grow across the state. In 2025, CMF renamed the award for its founding CEO, Dottie Johnson, a lifelong champion of Michigan philanthropy.

The Goodmans have supported their communities for more than twenty years. Their giving has never been a single gift. It has been a steady, long-term investment in the places they call home.

That commitment took formal shape in 2008, when the Goodmans created an unrestricted fund at AAACF. The fund has helped build lasting philanthropic support for Ypsilanti, where George served as mayor for more than a decade and where both have deep civic ties. In 2019, they brought the same commitment north by creating an unrestricted fund at MICF. For a small island foundation, flexible dollars like these go a long way.

The Goodmans have also given their time. George has served on the MICF Board of Trustees and as board chair. Judith has served on MICF grant committees and on the AAACF Board of Trustees. Their work doesn’t stop when the meetings end. Both believe community philanthropy is one of the best tools there is for building healthy, resilient communities.
